Nanny donates part of her liver to save the toddler she met just weeks earlier

The job of a nanny isn’t simple. You are put in charge of a child that is not your own. You might be paid but for that little amount of money, you are tasked with making sure the child is fed, changed, and raised in a manner that ensures they turn out to be a great person.

Kiersten Miles, a 22-year old college student from New Jersey, took the job to an entirely new level recently when she donated part of her liver to the young toddler she was caring for.

Nine-month-old Talia Rosko had only met Miles a few weeks before the amazing nanny offered to donate part of her liver to the little girl.  Talia suffers from a potentially life-threatening liver disease called Bilary Atresia.

Talia’s parents were completely shocked when Miles said she wanted to help ensure the little girl would grow up to live a happy and healthy life. “I’m like: ‘Kiersten, this is a serious surgery. You have to talk to your parents. It’s not like donating blood,’” recalls Farra Rosko, Talia’s mother.

Miles spent months undergoing testing to see if she was a match and immediately made up her mind when she found out the transplant could move forward.

“It’s such a small sacrifice when you compare it to saving a life,” said Miles. “Some of her doctors said she possibly wouldn’t have made it past two-years-old.”

On January 11, Miles went under the knife for a five-hour surgery in which they removed part of her liver, taking it to a children’s hospital next door. Talia is now a healthy and happy 16-month old little girl.

What is even more incredible is just how much the nanny downplayed her part. “All I had to do was be in the hospital for a week and a 5-inch scar. I don’t know, it just seemed like such a small sacrifice.”

She says the moment she was able to see Talia and the little girl smiles, she knew it was worth it.

She wrote in a Facebook post that she received an amazing outpouring of love and support.”

“I don’t know where we would be without Kiersten,” says Talia’s mother.
