Hotel workers learn a lot about people through their line of work. Unfortunately, one thing they are frequently educated about is how rude some people can be, especially relating to the way they leave their rooms.
When it comes to cleanliness, one Utah hotel worker has seen it all. Nothing really fazes her anymore when she goes into her assigned rooms. But when two guests left something unexpected between the sheets of the bed, this worker couldn't help but cry.
No Job Is Simple
People in the workforce tend to agree that no matter the type of job, nothing is "simple." People in the housekeeping industry, especially, don't have it easy.
These folks are tasked with cleaning up after guests who really don't care how dirty they leave their rooms for hotel staff to deal with. But one maid in Park City, Utah, would show up at work each day and give it her all.
She Didn't Have A Dime To Her Name
This woman landed in her job under an unusual set of circumstances. In 2013, she strolled up to a hotel's front desk with a bubble of confidence around her. No one would have ever guessed that she didn't have a dime to her name.
With no previous experience and with nothing left to lose, she walked right up to the front desk and asked to speak with someone about possible employment at the hotel.
It All Started With A "Help Wanted" Sign
It all started with the woman stumbling upon a "Help Wanted" sign outside the hotel. With nothing to lose, she went straight inside and asked to speak with the owner. She told the person in charge that she was available for any type of work they need.
Of course, the owner was a bit skeptical about the woman. She didn't have a resume or any experience, from what they could tell, but she was confident about her work ethic.
The Hotel Was In Dire Need Of Help
Even though the owner was hesitant to give the woman the job, the hotel really needed a new housekeeper. Some of the guests that came through the Park City, Utah, hotel could be horrible.
They would leave the rooms in complete disarray, and it would take an army to right it again for the next guest. It's almost as if these people didn't care one bit! The hotel was in dire need of some assistance.
Who Were They To Deny Her The Position?
The guests that came through the hotel were so bad and disrespectful that the previous housekeeper had quit! Unfortunately, for the hotel, they hadn't been able to find anyone to take up the position since the last person left.
They were in no state to be picky about who they employed for the position. And if the confident woman swore she could turn any of the room's messes around before the next guest arrived, who were they to deny her the position?
She Was Made Of Some Tough Stuff
Only thinking she would last a few days, if that, the owner gave the woman the housekeeper position. To her astonishment, the lady didn't quit after seeing the messy state of the rooms. Obviously this woman had way tougher skin than the previous employee.
In just a matter of weeks, she had constructed an entirely new organizational system for the hotel and even was able to tackle a huge mountain of dirty laundry that was piling up in the back room!
The Owner Wanted To Do Something Nice For Her Employee
The owner was no longer doubtful of her decision to employ the lady. She obviously had a very strong work ethic and didn't mind getting down and dirty if one of the rooms was a complete disaster.
She only wished she could reward her employee with something other than her paycheck. Unfortunately, the owner just didn't have the resources to give the housekeeper anything extra. Thankfully, she knew a few people who would be eager to put something nice together.
Kyle Oreffice And Josh Gibson Make A Living Doing Good Deeds
Kyle Oreffice and Josh Gibson are two men who made a name for themselves a few years back by doing good deeds all over the United States. They don't ask for recognition, but they do videotape the reactions of people who are the recipients of the nice acts.
They then post the videos to their YouTube channel, GiveBackFilms. When they first started the channel, their first few films made a huge splash! So, they decided to roll with their vision.
Their Videos Garnered Millions Of Views
These two filmmakers put themselves on the map with their random acts of kindness. Their heart-warming clips of them giving homeless people large sums of money were hard to scroll past.
Even though the act of giving is quite simple, the videos on their channel garnered millions upon millions of views. With their momentum going, Kyle and Josh decided to go bigger and better with their random acts. Since helping those in need was obviously their calling, why not do whatever they could to help?
They Decided The Utah Housekeeper Was A Perfect Subject
In 2014, Josh and Kyle found out about the Park City, Utah, maid who was going above and beyond for the hotel where she worked. They decided she was the perfect person to surprise with a random act of kindness.
So, with the help of the hotel owner, the two men set up hidden cameras in one of the rooms the housekeeper attended to. Now, all they had to do was "plant the kindness" and wait!
They Mussed Up The Room A Bit
Once Kyle and Josh were in their assigned room, they had to set up their equipment. After their highly technical setup, though, they had to make the room somewhat lived-in. They didn't want the housekeeper to be suspicious of anything, after all.
So, they moved some of the room's furniture around and mussed up the pillows a bit. Just enough to make it look as though two messy people had stayed in the room at least one night.
Everything Was Planted
Once they made the room look as though a rockstar stayed the evening, Josh and Kyle planted the last two pieces of their kindness puzzle. While Josh wrote down a quick note for the housekeeper to find, Kyle went ahead and hid a large envelope under the sheets of one of the beds.
Now, they sat back in their van and waited for the maid to come through the room and find the package they left for her.
Now, They Waited
After the room was sufficiently messy and the note and package were hidden under the sheets, Josh and Kyle took the "Do Not Disturb" sign off the door and made themselves scarce. The housekeeper was going to make her rounds any minute.
The last thing the two men and the owner wanted was for the surprise to be ruined because they didn't get out of the room fast enough! The wait was on.
They Could Hardly Contain Their Excitement
The two YouTubers ran out of the hotel and into their van, which faced the bugged room. There, they waited for the housekeeper to come through. They couldn't wait to see her face once she found their surprise.
Josh and Kyle could hardly contain themselves when they saw her walk through the door. This housekeeper's day was about to be made, and she had absolutely no idea! Ironically, she didn't see the note or package for some time.
The Housekeeper Was Shocked
Finally, the housekeeper made her way over to the bed. Josh and Kyle were pretty much bouncing off of the van's seats when she pulled back the covers to strip the bed. They could see the maid gasp and put her hand over her mouth in shock.
Then, they saw as tears rolling down her face. She never expected to see the contents lying there on the mattress. She was shocked.
There Was A $500 Tip!
To the housekeeper's utter surprise, there on the mattress was a rainbow of twenties and a note saying, "This is a tip! Enjoy!" The twenties wound up totaling a solid $500! Usually, the maid received tips of maybe a few dollars here or there, if she was lucky.
So, seeing $500 just lying there for the taking was life-changing, especially for someone who was living paycheck to paycheck. But who were the generous people who left such a substantial amount of money?
She Was Overwhelmed With Gratitude
After the housekeeper composed herself a bit, Josh and Kyle stepped out of the van. She gave the two men the biggest hugs and thanked them both for their generosity. The housekeeper never dreamed of finding that much money in one of the beds she tended to.
There were no words to express her gratitude to the two men. But there were some words that she said that no one had expected to come out of her mouth.
She Said She Couldn't Accept The Money
Although she was beyond grateful for the life-changing tip, there was no way she could accept the money. This is a woman who was used to having close to nothing.
So when people showed her an overwhelming amount of kindness in the form of money, it was hard for her to accept. That was when Kyle and Josh took her by the hand and told her about their mission. It was only then that she accepted.
Josh And Kyle Convinced Her She Deserved The Cash
After a bit of convincing, the housekeeper finally accepted the $500 tip from Kyle and Josh. They convinced her that she deserved the money after all the hard work she put into her job at the hotel.
Ironically, in the end, the two men seemed to be happier than the maid about the money. Josh explained, "there's something really cool about someone being genuinely happy, and it’s exciting." But the thrill of giving to someone in need wasn't their only motivation.
They Hope Others Are Inspired By Acts Of Kindness
During an interview with the Desert News, Josh said, "I think that's our underlying goal in this channel is to be able to have people not only read about kind acts, but I think it's fun to be able to go to a YouTube channel and see something happening that's good."
"Then it makes you feel good, and it makes you feel happy. And then it will hopefully influence you to go out and do the same thing."
