Obama Being An Awesome Citizen In 2017

He was no longer serving as President of the United States, yet Barack Obama remained in the spotlight throughout 2017. With a killer Spotify playlist, tweets focused on unity, and some amazing vacation photos that have gone viral, it was hard to avoid the 44th POTUS and, honestly, we wouldn’t want to keep him in the dark.

Here are the best moments of President Obama’s first year out of office.

Hanging Out With His Buddy, Prince Harry

Many presidents ride off into the sunset to play golf and collect million dollar checks for speaking engagements. Obama kicked off his year by vacationing and hanging out with friends. Among his closest buddies is Prince Harry. Here they are laughing it up on day seven of the Invictus Games in Toronto, Ontario. A recent controversy has broken out after it was revealed that Prince Harry allegedly wants to invite Barack and Michelle Obama to his wedding but not President Trump. With the wedding only a short time away, we might hear more about this awkward situation soon.

After serving our country in the White House for eight years, the Obama squad headed off on an adventure. In this picture, President Obama (second on the left) races down a river at Bongkasa Village in Badung on Bali island on June 26, 2017. He was accompanied by Michelle, Sasha, and Malia. The Obama’s took a 10-day family holiday in Indonesia, spending time in Bali and Jakarta, the city where the former president spent part of his childhood. It was hard to find pictures of Barack without his signature shades, even when whitewater rafting!

Barack Obama definitely knew exactly how to kick off his exit from the white house. This photo, taken on February 1, 2017, shows the President kitesurfing at Richard Branson’s Necker Island retreat. The former president and his family visited the British Virgin Islands for some much-deserved rest and relaxation. The trip occurred only 11 days after Barack, Michelle, and the rest of the Obama family cleared out of the White House to make way for Donald Trump. Photos of the vacation quickly went viral and showed an even more laid-back side of Obama. After eight years running the United States, this is the type of vacation we’d be looking to take as well.

During his entire presidency, Obama was attacked by Donald Trump for taking time off to golf. We now know that Trump golfs far more than Obama ever did while in the White House but it was none-the-less a distraction. After his tenure as Commander-In-Chief came to an end, Obama started hitting the links at some of the most revered courses in the world. Here he is playing a round of golf at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland on May 26, 2017. Once again he’s sporting a hat, sunglasses, and a laid-back and fun attitude.

Like the men that came before him, President Obama did not stop supporting the American people after leaving office. In this photo, taken on October 21, 2017, the President attended “Deep from the Heart: The One American Appeal Concert” in support of hurricane relief efforts. President Obama hung out with former U.S. Presidents, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. The concert was a big success by bringing in donations and drawing further attention to the plight of people affected by multiple hurricanes throughout the United States in 2017. This wasn’t the only time President Obama once again inspired the American people after leaving office.

On March 10, 2017, President Obama, his wife, Michelle, and U2 singer, Bono, joined together for a lunch at Upland restaurant in New York City. The trip wasn’t publicized but that didn’t stop hundreds of Barack’s supporters from stopping to cheer for the former U.S. President as he exited the upscale eatery. In true presidential fashion, he flashed his million-dollar smile and waved to the adoring crowd. Obama may no longer live in the white house but he has continued to offer advice to the masses and supporters still follow him closely, as we’ll see in a moment.

On January 10, 2017, President Obama stood in front of thousands of supports in Chicago as he provided his farewell address. The man who managed to avoid any type of major personal controversy for eight years in office was tearful as he called for hope, compassion, and forward-thinking in the years to come. His supporters were shaken by President Trump’s sudden rise to power but Obama focused on making America truly great again through a message of unity and hope. His genuine love of America shined through as he delivered his final address to the people he served for nearly a decade.

On January 12, 2017, as he was preparing to leave the white house, President Obama offered Vice President Joe Biden a surprise he would never forget. Obama bestowed upon his friend the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A visibly shook VP accepted the medal. The white house describes the medal as “the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” In six decades only 582 people have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Former President Obama received notice that he was expected for jury duty in Chicago. Instead of attempting to sidestep the law, he gladly accepted $17.20 for each day of service required of him. Obama headed to Chicago on November 8, 2017, and appeared in the courthouse just like every other resident of the area. It’s probably no surprise that he wasn’t selected to serve. With a background in law and a civic-minded approach to politics, the 44th POTUS used the opportunity to remind all Americans that we need to do our part if we want our country to succeed. He even looks like he was having fun based on this picture taken by Joshua Lott.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden shared a warm embrace after the President delivered his farewell speech in Chicago, Illinois. President Obama, in true fashion, delivered a speech meant to energize his base while providing hope for the future. Obama and Biden were celebrated with a bunch of hilarious memes that touched upon the close connection they shared in the white house for eight years. Jokes aside, the two men really seemed to admire each other more than any internet joke could possibly capture. Biden looks visibly shaken by the fact that he would no longer be running the country with his good friend.

We did not expect President Obama to spend the entire year vacationing and he didn’t disappoint. On May 9, 2017, the 44th POTUS was in Milan for the third edition of “Seed & Chips: The Global Food Innovation Summit.” The special event focuses on bringing new technologies to market that can help feed people around the globe. Obama is a big supporter of improving agricultural innovation and distribution at a time when billions of people are still near starvation levels, despite growing economies and more opportunities. President Obama spoke about income inequality, rain patterns, privacy issues, and even his post-presidential life.

In The Community

Before he was the President of the United States or even a Junior Senator from Illinois, Barack Obama was a community organizer. The former POTUS got back to his roots on January 16, 2017, when he visited the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter in Washington, D.C. Barack Obama and Michelle Obama jumped into action, helping paint a beautiful mural of the deceased equal rights leader. Barack Obama has continued to push an agenda of community and global involvement since stepping out of his role as POTUS. His tweets have proven effective in diverting attention away from moments of hate as we’ll soon see.

After 108 winless years, the Chicago Cubs finally claimed a World Series trophy in 2016 and it was President Obama who had the honor of welcoming them to the White House. Obama’s “adopted” hometown of Chicago was still celebrating when the President congratulated the men on their victory. During his speech, the President of the United States couldn’t help but tear up at the historic moment. The 44th POTUS was nearing the end of eight years in the toughest job in the world and yet he still seemed genuinely happy and surprised by moments like this.

Even when he wasn’t actually in the room, President Obama was having the best post-Presidential first year ever! The Grevin Wax Museum in Paris, France, decided to honor the president with a fun Christmas sweater. The “Dabbin'” shirt was put on the 44th POTUS to commemorate Christmas 2017. President Obama brought a new kind of swagger to the White House and this shirt, featured by a U.S.-friendly country did a great job of summing up the President’s influence over the USA and our allies. Based on Obama’s Spotify playlist which you’ll see next, it was probably a proper choice.

He Dropped A Killer Spotify List

Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, DJ Khaled, Rihanna: this isn’t your mom’s playlist. President Obama dropped his 2017 Spotify playlist and showed the world that he’s still young at heart. Most of the tracks offer inspirational messages but some are just plain fun. Obama is loved by many millennials and his playlist proves he’s in touch with the times. President Obama explained his choices perfectly, “From songs that got me moving to stories that inspired me, here’s my 2017 list — I hope you enjoy it and have a happy and healthy New Year.” A few of the President’s choices were not yet available on Spotify so keep checking his account for new additions in 2018.

After eight years in the white house, President Obama’s hair greyed but his demeanor remained unchanged. Here’s another photo of Obama as he basked in the weather of the British Virgin Islands. This photo, in which the President was taking a break from learning to kitesurf, went viral. The buff former President was in need of some time away from the cameras and Richard Branson’s exclusive Necker Island retreat provided the Obama’s with their own personal paradise during their extended vacation. President Obama managed to stay in shape during and after his presidency which is more than we can say about most of our previous presidents.

He Fought For Unity In 140 Characters

Obama United on Twitter.jpg

Did you know that four of Twitter’s most shared tweets were courtesy of Barack Obama in 2017? Whenever a social movement needed a push in the right direction or the opportunity presented itself, Obama took the time to declare a call to action or offer a reflection on the state of society in general. This tweet about the purity of a child’s mind racked up nearly 5 million likes and almost 2 million retweets. The 44th POTUS, now removed from office, continues to preach the same messages he delivered as a junior senator and then President of the United States of America.

He Played Some Friendly Golf With His Predecessors

On September 28, 2017, the President’s Cup got underway. Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton all gathered together for a friendly round of golf. Politics aside, only a few people in the world will ever get to experience the job and afterward, despite ideological differences, they often come together to celebrate what they accomplished and discuss what they learned from the harrowing experience. The three former presidents looked happy and relaxed as they gathered close together for dozens of photos. Team USA claimed a victory during the tournament, the country’s tenth win in 12 years.

Throughout his eight years in the oval office, President Obama was often spotted playing with children. His natural aptitude for holding a baby or making a little kid smile was amazing. We often joke that politicians are required to hold babies for the photo ops but President Obama’s natural abilities just seemed different. Days before leaving the white house the President continued to prove that he simply has a love for children that transcended his life in politics. Here he is celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. day just before Donald Trump took over in the white house.

Through It All…

Eight years after entering the white house both Barack and Michelle Obama prepared on this day to hand the torch to Donald Trump. Despite the realization that a man who made negative comments about Mexicans, women, Muslims, and many other groups, was about to take office, they seem calm and collected. A common theme among supporters of Barack Obama is the realization that there were no major family scandals when the 44th POTUS was serving his country. Eight years later, this power couple still looks great and surprisingly laid back. It’s no surprise that both Barack and Michelle, after a short vacation, got right back to work.
