A NatGeo photographer was amazed when he ran into a whale at the bottom of the ocean

National Geographic‘s Brian Skerry took a 3-week expedition to the Aukland Islands in wintertime. When he left he never expected the caliber of animal encounter that he was about to experience.

While scuba diving, Brian, and his assistant, received a giant surprise. Out of nowhere a 45-foot-long whale – “as big as a city bus” – approached the two men out of curiosity, and hovered just feet from their location in an unprecedented way.

Brian says the whale encounter led to some of the best photographs he has ever taken.

As Skerry explains his once-in-a-lifetime encounter it’s easy to understand how his adrenaline must have been pumping during his incredible whale encounter.
