Florida Inmates Use Special “Skills” To Rescue Infant Trapped In Locked Car

We’ve all had those moments where we’ve slipped up and accidentally locked ourselves out of our cars. This is precisely what happened to one couple in Florida – who’d accidentally locked their one-year-old daughter inside. The father threw the keys in the front seat and buckled up his daughter in her car seat. When he closed the back door, he realized the car was locked. The couple tried to open the car on their own, to no avail.

The father was about to smash his driver’s side window in before law enforcement officials nearby stepped in to help. A Pasco County Sheriff’s Office inmate supervisor and five low-risk offenders were repairing a nearby parking lot median. Ironically, it was the inmates’ special “skill set” that would end up saving the day. The father helped the inmates pry the car door open enough for another inmate to use a wire coat hanger to push the unlock button on the door.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco praised the inmates who sprang into action but joked to NBC 2 News, “Only when a deputy is around and we give permission, ‘Can you break  into that car.'”

Nocco added, “Our trustees are people who have made mistakes, we’re trying to rehabilitate them and get back into society… A lot of them, like these individuals, they know they made bad mistakes, bad choices, but they want to do the right thing in life.”
