The Wild Animal Sanctuary isn’t just one sanctuary – it’s got two sites with more than 9,000 square acres for its rescued large animals. The sanctuary’s goal is to rescue animals from horrific captive situations, rehabilitate them and allow them to live freely and peacefully on their grounds with others of their kind.
The sanctuary was established in 1980 and responds to over 1,000 requests a year from people hoping to save animals they witness in horrific conditions across the United States and the world. Most of their residents – which include black bears, lions, wolves, foxes, and ostriches – were confiscated from private citizens or sent from zoos where they faced euthanasia after overcrowding or closure. From rescuing 40 tigers in a roadside zoo in Oklahoma to bringing in 28 African Lions from Panama and Bolivia, this Colorado sanctuary truly makes a difference.
