Sloths aren’t exactly the largest animals, but they are some of the slowest. These vulnerable creatures often need some extra care which is why the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica has been working to aid injured, abandoned and orphaned sloths since 1992. Everything here is done completely ethically. While visitors can see the sloths up close, they cannot touch. These rescued sloths are extremely susceptible to tachycardia when they’re handled by unfamiliar hands which can result in premature death.
Just because you can’t cuddle a sloth, doesn’t mean the trip isn’t worth it. Visitors can take a canoe tour of the creature’s natural habitat and learn about the threats these gentle souls face (which – shocker – happens to be us).
