While many large animal rehabs focus on big cats, elephants, and rhinos, the hippos need some love too. Hippos are some of the most dangerous animals in the world, killing a whopping 2,900 people in Africa every year. Despite this, the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary, which was founded by local chiefs in 1999, aims to protect the not-so-gentle giants.
If you ever dreamed of visiting with hippos in their natural habitat, you can visit the sanctuary and safely watch them swim around in the river. The bonus is that you get to learn all about hippo conservation. The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary won the Ghana Tourist Board’s Tourist Initiative of the Year Awards nearly 20 years ago, but they’re still going strong.
