In an article for Scientific American, Jason G. Goldman described the metacognition of a California scrub jay as akin to when humans think of a strategy to fill in the blanks on a Crossword puzzle word they don’t know. Also called “thinking about thinking,” the birds displayed this ability in a test when they saw researchers pack food into a set of containers with three open cups at once and a set with one open cup at once. Since the second of these researchers could only possibly hold the food in one open container, the birds consistently chose this person.
